The renowned term “pura vida” or pure life is more than just a phrase in Costa Rica. It’s a mindset with depth of contentment, appreciation, and optimism embedded in the common language and lifestyles of communities across the country.
In 1956, the Mexican comedy film, ¡Pura vida!, featured actor Antonio Espino, who faces a series of misfortunes with a positive outlook. The film ignited a cultural awakening in Costa Rica and became a monumental part of the country’s life. Today, “Pura Vida” can be heard widely throughout the country through the exchange of conversation or greetings, and even as Jessica Blanco and Kelly Zuniga describe a practice of gratitude for the joys of life.
