Costa Rica is a renowned home to many animals including hundreds of bird species such as the Scarlet Macaw and Toucan.
Although these creatures are intended to live in their natural habitat, some reside in Proyecto Asis, a wildlife rehabilitation center. Located just outside La Fortuna, the educational center and sanctuary staff provide care to animals unable to return to nature due to domestication or injury.
As an intern at Proyecto Asis, Valeria Alvarenga raises awareness of the dangers the removal of wildlife can pose for these animals and the larger ecosystem.
