Hello world! Welcome to “Where our stories meet,” an original production of The Reg Murphy Center for Collaborative Journalism. Here, we share stories from newsmakers, legends and friends – all connected by life in Macon, Georgia. This is “Where Our Stories Meet: Education.” In this three-part series, we hear from graduates of Macon public high schools – and from one Macon legend who spent her entire life working to change the school system forever. Let’s get started.
Ronnie Thompson was Macon’s first Republican mayor, and a controversial figurehead. In this podcast, Thompson’s son and nephew talk about what being related to Ronnie means to them– and what growing up during integration in Macon was like.
We start with Steve Thompson, Ronnie Thompson’s nephew, who has lived in Macon his entire life and wouldn’t have it any other way. “Steve’s Love Letter to Macon” is followed by an introduction to John Thompson, Ronnie Thompson’s son, in “Grandson of a Lanier High School Custodian” where he describes how he went from Macon to Denver by the end of high school.
