Mercer students volunteering with Proyecto Asis in Costa Rica during Mercer On Mission in June 2026 experienced wildlife rehabilitation through hands-on service.
Students helped build animal habitats and enrichment devices, assisted with veterinary care, and learned how to safely work around wildlife. For many, the experience pushed them outside their comfort zones while showing them the direct impact of their work. From helping care for a three-toed sloth mother and her baby to seeing how staff handled difficult moments with compassion, students witnessed the heart behind Proyecto Asis’ mission.
The trip taught them to adapt, support each other, and stay open to new experiences, or, as one student put it, “not to drown in shallow water.”
