If you’re involved in the Macon music scene, you’ll know about the larger local venues like the Atrium Health Amphitheater, the Macon Coliseum, or the Macon City Auditorium. But what if you want a more intimate live music experience? Here are five smaller local venues to check out.
1. Established in 1971, Grant’s Lounge has some of the richest music history on this list. Located in the historical downtown Macon, Grant’s was one of the first integrated music bars which has helped Macon become a staple in Southern Rock. They’ve featured artists like the Allman Brothers, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton and more. The newly renovated venue includes artists from different genres and also features a Wall of Fame displaying the rich musical history of Macon.
2. This next venue is a favorite among college students. The Hummingbird Stage and Taproom was established in 2005 in the heart of downtown Macon. This venue has previously been voted people’s choice as Best Overall Bar, Best Place To Hear Live Music, and Best Bar Staff. This is a popular spot for punk, rock, and country bands. You can also catch regional and national touring bands here. This is also a great spot to play some cornhole or darts, while you enjoy live music with friends. The Hummingbird has featured artists like Col. Bruce Hampton, Jason Isbell, The Delta Saints, and many more.
3. The Society Garden, established in 2017, is the newest venue on this list. Located in the historic Ingleside Village of Macon, the Garden features a new stage expansion, new audio system, and bleacher-like seating with a capacity of 500. Every weekend, local and national touring bands can be found playing here. You can also catch comedians here like David Lucas, Lace Larrabee & Friends, Hannah Dasher and more. If you’re an Alice in Wonderland fan, this is the place you want to be with Alice in Wonderland themed decor and drinks. They are also a family and dog friendly space, so don’t hesitate to bring the young ones or your furbabies!
4. The Capitol Theatre is the oldest and largest venue on the list with a capacity of 650. Entertaining Macon residents since 1916, the Capitol Theatre has been through its ups and downs. The venue was closed in 1976 before being restored and reopened in 2006. The theater features new high definition surround sound systems for their live music acts. The venue once frequently featured iconic artists like Little Richard, Otis Redding, and James Brown. This is a great venue to catch artists from all genres as their acts can range from local rock bands, to popular R&B artists, and even to national tours. Some artists who have performed here are Teddy Swims, Tab Benoit, and Drivin’ N’ Cryin’.
5. This next venue is a popular tourist destination in Macon. The Allman Brothers Band Museum at The Big House is commonly known as the home of the Allman Brothers Band, which was based in Macon. The house was later turned into a museum full of the history and memorabilia of the band and their associates. However, this is a great place to catch live bands performing in the backyard of the Big House. Local and touring bands alike have performed at the Big House and the venue often features artists from different genres. The Big House also featured a summer concert series over the summer where you could find different bands and performers every month! This spot is a great place to bring your family and chill outdoors with some great live music.
These venues not only support local talent but also offer a unique atmosphere to enjoy live music. Whether you’re a longtime Macon resident or just visiting, be sure to check them out!
