Macon resident Tonja Khabir on building a house in Pleasant Hill
Tonja Khabir decided to build a house in a neighborhood she knows well. Through her work in community development, Khabir already knows many of her future neighbors in Pleasant Hill.
“I found a house across the street from a woman that I know and love,” she said.
The home buying process means a lot to Khabir. She attributes the work of her mother and her grandmother in helping her become who she is today, in helping her get to this point in her life.
“Everything that I’ve done has been because they have been able to raise me to be who I am,” she says, “so for me, it’s their house. They put the work in for this. It’s repairing and it’s healing, not only an injustice, but just bringing it back to its healing and making it a home.”
