Theatre Macon’s Stage 2 productions prepare for first performance on the main stage
Rehearsals are underway for Theatre Macon’s Stage 2 production of “The Dining Room” by A. R. Gurney.
Directed by Gail Johnson, “The Dining Room” features a “mosaic of interrelated scenes,” according to Theatre Macon’s website. The scenes all take place in, you guessed it, a dining room. The production is already in rehearsals and will run Oct. 17-20.
The Stage 2 series is in its inaugural year at Theatre Macon. The program is a way for local artists to spread their wings and take on pieces they wouldn’t normally be able to work on.
“The series is a new platform involving community directors other than myself who submit ideas and stage and direct shows,” Richard Frazier, artistic director of Theatre Macon, told The Macon Telegraph in June. “It gives the chance to expand what we present and who presents it while keeping the same quality expected from Theatre Macon.”
The goal of the Stage 2 series is to get more community members involved in the arts by providing more ways for them to join in. The program added 4 shows to Theatre Macon’s already massive season, which includes Main Stage shows like Steve Martin’s Tony-nominated “Bright Star” and the Junior version of the Disney mega-hit “Frozen.”
The Stage 2 shows are directed by volunteers who apply to the program in the spring. The application process includes the show you want to do, as well as your expected budget for the production. Frazier said that the funds are provided by Sami Dame and Annie Dame, two long-time supporters of Theatre Macon.
The first Stage 2 production, “Sylvia,” took place during the summer. It was performed on Mercer University’s campus in the Tattnall Square Center for the Arts, which is unusual for Theatre Macon.
“There’s only one production now that will be at Tattnall but doing it there let us have four versus three Stage 2 shows this year. Because it’s the Stage 2 Series, we could easily do that,” Frazier said to the Telegraph.
