Voices across generations echoed through Atlanta Pride on Oct. 11, National Coming Out Day. Queer elders reflected on the danger of marching in the 1980s, parents offered “free mom hugs” for anyone in need and young trans people found community after braving isolation. This year’s celebration was a hub for safety and positivity, but also carried the weight of renewed political fear. Yet throughout the crowd, the message remained unshakeable: Pride is protest, community is survival and no matter how far back things slide, as one person put it – “we are not going to be silent.”
