As Macon-Bibb County prepares to collect $450 million in 2025 SPLOST proceeds over 10 years, Mayor Lester Miller took county commissioners on a bus tour of several sites for potential development valued at more than a billion dollars.
The May 13 Committee of the Whole meeting began with an hour behind closed doors at City Hall for an executive session that continued for nearly another hour while commissioners toured the inside of the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center.
County attorneys said security system operations and discussions inside the jail were shielded from the media. Other reasons cited for the closed session included potential legal litigation and real estate options.
When the commission was back in regular session on the bus, Miller cautioned passengers that media was now present so they should be mindful when asking questions and making comments about these prospective projects and developments.
The Macon Newsroom was aboard the bus and shares this video from the trip that included stops at potential sites for a new jail and public safety complex, Walnut Street parking plaza at Carolyn Crayton Park, East Bank development site, potential placement of a new arena in the Coliseum parking lot, Mercer University’s planned site for a new School of Medicine, the vacant lot at 108 First Street that used to house a high-rise hotel that was imploded New Year’s Day, 4687 Rivoli Drive, and the Eisenhower Parkway site for planned student housing for Central Georgia Technical College.
