Public transportation is a vital part of Macon’s infrastructure.
“We serve primarily people who don’t have a personal vehicle,” says Jami Gaudet, Public Information Officer for the Macon-Bibb County Transit Authority (MTA). “And if you don’t have a personal vehicle when you need groceries, you go for dialysis. You go to the doctor. You want to visit family and friends. You want to go for a job interview or work. You need reliable, affordable public transportation and that’s what we offer, so I call us a lifeline.
The MTA provides accessibility, affordability, and independence for riders across 11 fixed routes operating Monday through Saturday, starting as early as 5:30 a.m. Monday – Friday, fixed routes end at 9 p.m. On Saturdays, fixed routes end at 7 p.m. MTA is also the first transportation authority in the state to provide public transportation on electric buses.
In 2024, their fixed rate buses served 749,000 riders, averaging around 2,700 people a day. The Macon Transit Authority also has a door to door service for people who cannot utilize a bus on their own. These paratransit buses had 48,000 riders last year, averaging 155 people a day.
Whether you rely on the bus daily or are considering riding for the first time, here are seven things you may not know about how the MTA serves Macon.
Through recent updates, riders can track the buses’ estimated arrival and departure times in real time. Gone are the days of waiting at the bus stop and hoping the bus shows up. The Macon Transit Authority site shows all 11 routes. It also allows a real-time GPS tracking map to show the bus fulfilling its route on its way to a rider’s stop. These times and maps provide information for inbound (heading toward the terminal) and outbound (leaving the terminal) bus routes and assisting riders in coming and going.
2. Fare Options & Special Rates
Although the standard bus fare for a one-way trip is $1.25, MTA offers discounted rates for seniors $0.60, students 13-18), $0.75, and veterans, and those with disabilities. Kids twelve and under ride free. Bibb County veterans 65 and older who have been honorably discharged from the military also ride free. Riders can purchase passes and/or tickets anytime through the transit app to be used on their trip. Additionally, riders can purchase daily, weekly or monthly passes for additional saving and convenience. Students 13-18 can purchase an unlimited bus pass for the summer (June – July) for $25. MTA accepts multiple forms of payment including cash, pre-purchased bus passes and tickets through the MTA app.
3. Accessibility Features
Accessibility is a core feature of MTA. All buses include ramps/lifts to assist passengers using mobility devices. All MTA buses also have assisted seating in the front of the buses as well as seating that allows for mobility devices to be secured and riders to be secured while riding in the mobility devices to avoid having to get up and down.
4. Bicycle Racks Available
Each MTA bus has a front-mounted rack that allows its riders to transport their bicycles. This feature encourages eco-friendly commuting and gives bus riders who are also cyclists a way to commute longer distances without having to sacrifice.
Riders traveling across multiple routes can request a transfer slip when they board. Transfers are $.50 in addition to the stated fare. Transfers are valid for a set period and help make longer commutes more affordable and accessible for those navigating multiple routes.
In addition to its fixed-route system, the MTA offers Paratransit services for riders with physical or cognitive disabilities who are unable to use standard buses. These specialty vehicles are fully equipped with wheelchair lifts, secure seating areas, and drivers who offer personalized assistance as needed. Riders can schedule trips in advance to access medical appointments, grocery stores, work, or other key destinations throughout Macon-Bibb. For those who require help during their ride, a personal assistant or caregiver is welcome to travel with them at no additional charge. With a fare of just $2.50 each way, MTA’s Paratransit service ensures mobility and independence. For more information riders can call the Paratransit line at 478-803-2521 .
