2. River Float
Enjoy the Ocmulgee River by taking a river float! It is a great activity for a hot day that you can do by yourself or with a guided tour. There are also equipment rentals on the riverbanks that offer paddleboards, canoes, and kayaks if you would rather than a tube. There is an entrance to the river at Amerson River Park if you want to go the cheaper route, and go without a guide. 3. Atrium Health Amphitheater
The Atrium Health Amphitheater is Macon’s newest entertainment venue. With lawn seating for 10,000 people according to maconcentreplex.org, the Amphitheatre is a great place to enjoy live music and other fun events with family and friends. The large capacity is also attracting big stars like country music star Riley Green who brought his ‘Ain’t My Last Rodeo’ Tour to Macon on April 4, 2024. Another huge country music star, Koe Wetzel, is set to come to the Amphitheater in September on his ‘Damn Near Normal’ Tour. 4. Allman Brothers Museum
A compilation of the Allman Brothers legacy can be found at the Big House Museum, right in the place where the band started and where soul lives. The Big House Museum is where the band, friends, and family stayed from 1970 to 1973 as the Allman Brothers careers skyrocketed and they became known as the founders of Southern rock. Take a stroll down memory lane and be immersed in the Allman Brothers legendary career and journey by taking a tour. The Big House Museum is open Thursday through Saturday 11 am- 6pm.
5. Smiley’s Flea Market
As Georgia’s largest and finest flea market, Smileys is a great place for shoppers and families alike according to Smiley’s Flea Market. You can expect a big open air space to shop with tons of vendors, so there is something for everybody. There are eight restaurants on site serving authentic Mexican food, hamburgers, ribs, and more along with concessions for your enjoyment. You can also ride Smiley’s Carousel and Bumper Cars for $1 per ride or $5 for unlimited rides according to smileysfleamarket.com. Smiley’s Flea Market is open Friday through Sunday.
6. Ocmulgee Mounds
One of Macon’s most prized gems is the Ocmulgee Mounds, a National Historic Park. The mounds were once home to the Muskogee Nation and the evidence is seen throughout the park which is fascinating to see. The park’s 1,860 acres holds so many beautiful landscapes and ecosystems that you can explore. For example, one of the most notable landscapes is the Earth Lodge which is a reconstructed council chamber of Missipian culture that is over 1,000 years old. Take a walk-through history on the various nature trails and learn more about Macon’s earliest ancestors.
7. Late Nite
If you are looking for a place to dance and drink, Late Nite in downtown Macon is a great place to start. Late Nite is a local nightclub known for its lasers, disco balls, and fun-filled atmosphere. You can expect a great time with even greater music by various Dj’s and theme nights offered every weekend. Wes Nobiles, the owner of Late Nite, upcycled a lot of the structures seen in the club. For example, he used metal scraps from Target combined with a DIY colorful, glittery bartop to create both the upstairs and downstairs bars which nicely complement the historic brick walls. The hard work and effort is reflected in the club and contribute to the unique, fun vibe.
8. Society Garden
Society Garden located on Ingleside Avenue is a beloved beer garden and live music venue in Macon. Society Garden hosts many events that can fit as many as 500 people and offers over 100 craft beers according to thesocietygarden.com. There is also ping pong and corn hole which creates a family-friendly environment for everyone. The scenic murals, bright furniture, gardening, and fairy lights all contribute to a funky, unique atmosphere.
