A new sports team will be making Macon their home this year. The Macon Bacon baseball team will be playing starting in summer of 2018. Here are seven things to know about the team as they set down roots in Macon.


  1. The Macon Bacon will be playing at Luther Williams Field

According to the President of the Macon Bacon, Todd Pund, Luther Williams Field was chosen as the location because it is a historic site. Also, many minor league teams will ask for a new stadium, but since Macon already has one, it was not necessary to build a new one.


  1. They will be renovating Luther Williams Field for the opening season

Since the team will not have to build a new stadium, the Macon Bacon is putting $2.5 million into the renovation of Luther Williams Field. This money will go towards the locker rooms, field, dugout and other aspects of the stadium. They are also building outdoor cabana suites, VIP four top tables, VIP bar top tables, a children’s play area and a beer garden.


  1. Macon Bacon was not the only name discussed for the team

While Macon Bacon was the most popular choice for the team, several other options were discussed. The team could have been Macon Heat, Macon Noise or Macon Soul.


  1. The first season starts the summer of 2018

You can go ahead and put it on your calendar. The first home game for the Macon Bacon will take place on June 1, 2018.


  1. The Macon Bacon are in the Coastal Plain League

This league includes teams along the coast in the Southeastern United States. There is one other Georgia team in this league, the Savannah Bananas.


  1. There is a rivalry between the Savannah Bananas and Macon Bacon

Since Macon Bacon was announced as the new team in the Coastal Plain League, a rivalry has cropped up with the Savannah Bananas. The Savannah Bananas released a video on Twitter encouraging fans to save innocent pigs and boycott the Macon Bacon. As both teams enter into the 2018 season, it will be interesting to see what they have to say about each other on social media.


  1. As of right now, there is not a set team roster

According to Pund, the manager of the Macon Bacon is working on assembling a roster, but there are no definite players at this time. The roster will be announced as the season gets closer. College baseball players from all over the country are being considered as they work on getting a team together.
