Macon-Bibb County normally charges an extra fee to pick up large items but those charges are being waived during a special Holiday Cleanup from Nov. 4 – Dec. 20.

As Maconites prepare for the holidays, Macon-Bibb County’s Solid Waste Department has a special gift for the season.

The county will not be charging extra fees to pick up most large items in the first “Holiday Community Cleanup” from Nov. 4 – Dec. 20.

“We wanted to help people prepare their homes for the holiday season and visitors by giving them a chance to get rid of debris, appliances and material free of charge,”  Solid Waste Department Director Pat Raines told the county’s public affairs office.

Crews will be picking up car tires off the rim, toilets, cabinets, sinks, carpet, doors, and most building materials except shingles or insulation, appliances that are drained of any flammable material, bagged leaves, yard waste and limbs no larger than 4 inches in diameter and up to 4 feet long.

They will not collect dirt, brick or concrete, paint, pesticides or insecticides, gasoline, kerosine, freon, trees or stumps.

County Manager Keith Moffett said the community outreach could cut down on illegal dumping.

“Throughout the year, our departments often take on additional jobs and efforts as a way to better serve our neighborhoods,” Moffett stated in the news release. “I applaud their dedication and willingness to make events like this happen.”

The county’s IT department developed an interactive map so residents can input their address to find out which week the cleanup will be coming to their neighborhood.

All goods must be out on the curb by Sunday night of the collection week and crews will pick them up some time during that week.
