Vegan dining in Macon

On the quest for vegan restaurants in Macon, many restaurants I visited offered vegan and vegetarian options. However, most options were limited to salads, rice or potato dishes.

Several servers did not know the difference between vegan and vegetarian. This is not completely uncommon in a culture and city where soul food is king.

So, what’s the difference between vegan and vegetarian anyways?

The vegan diet consists entirely of fruits, vegetables and no animal byproducts. Animal milk, flavorings, seasonings and dairy cheese are all animal byproducts. The vegetarian diet is similar. But lacto-ovo vegetarians include animal milk, cheese and eggs in their diets.

My top three restaurant recommendations for vegan restaurants in the Macon area are Taj Indian Restaurant, Southern Vegan Soul and Chipotle Mexican Grill.

Taj Indian Restaurant

Address: 5033 Brookhaven Road

Hours: 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday

Price range: $9.95-$11.95

Pros: Consistent weekly operational hours, a wide variety of menu options.

Cons: Heavily trafficked area with limited parking.

Taj is an amazing restaurant with a plethora of appetizers, desserts and sides for everyone regardless of diet. It’s impossible to go wrong when dining at Taj.

Southern Vegan Soul Cafe

Address: 2055 Eisenhower Parkway

Hours: noon-3 p.m. Monday-Tuesday; noon-6 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday; noon-4 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday

Price range: $8.99-$10.99

Pros: Caters primarily to the vegan lifestyle. Food is fresh and delicious and the staff is very accommodating. Offers non-vegan options as well.

Cons: Odd hours. Difficult to locate without familiarly of the area or GPS.

Southern Vegan Soul Cafe is a hidden gem located at the Macon State Farmers Market. On my search for vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Macon, I stumbled upon the restaurant. It is a relatively new restaurant that has been operating since May 2018. The restaurant is locally owned and operated.

Chipotle Mexican Grill

Address: 120 Tom Hill Blvd.

Hours: 10:45 a.m-10 p.m. each day

Price range: $6.95+

Pros: Online ordering options, located off the interstate, located near local entertainment and shopping options. Short wait and service time.

Cons: Limited parking. Dining options may become boring after a few visits.

Chipotle is not exclusively vegan. The build your own meal options allow customers to specialize their entree meal.

Chipotle is convenient, affordable and offers a wide variety of ingredients. The service is quick even during the lunch hour rush.

We live in a world that runs nonstop. It can be hard to set aside time to cook. And when you live vegan, it’s almost impossible to sustain the lifestyle without cooking regularly. In a city where soul food reigns supreme, these restaurants are a great option for Maconites or visitors. These restaurants offer a good meal at a reasonable price. What could be better than that?
