Ice seems to be the theme for this week’s event preview. There is the closing of the “Fire and Ice” exhibit and sale, public ice skating, and Macon’s ice hockey team taking on the higher-ranked Pensacola Ice Flyers. Between all that, there is a benefit concert, a musical salute to the American experience, and a tour of a 19th-century home.

Garry Mullen and The Works at The Grand Opera House

This tribute band brings their hugely popular live show “One Night of Queen,” bellowing into Macon on Thursday night. Lead singer Garry Mullen is known for his high energy and dead-on vocal impression of Freddie Mercury and his backing band is just as good. Queen superfans can’t afford to miss this show.

The Macon Mayhem vs. The Pensacola Ice Flyers at the Macon Coliseum

The Mayhem take on the Ice Flyers on Friday at the Coliseum. Currently, the Mayhem is ranked 11th and the Ice Flyers 8th in the Southern Professional Hockey League standings, so it should be a good game. Additionally, this weekend is Military Appreciation Weekend for the Mayhem. All current and veteran military members receive 25% off the game ticket price (discounted tickets must be purchased at the box office with a military ID).

Fire and Ice 2022 at The Round Building at Carolyn Crayton Park

The final day of the Macon Arts Alliance’s Fire and Ice exhibit and sale is Saturday. 2022 marks the event’s fourth year, featuring the works of Georgia glassblowers and ceramicists. Local glass blower (and StARTup Studio owner) Brian Beck’s work comes highly recommended. Macon Arts Alliance has an online shopping page for the event if you can’t make it out to Carolyn Crayton Park.

Skydog 76 at Carolyn Crayton Park

Skydog is a celebration of Duane Allman’s music and musical influence. Featured artists include Scott Sharrard (former band leader and lead guitarist for Gregg Allman), bluegrass guitarist Dave Perkins and blues guitarist Junior Mack among others. The concert benefits Daybreak, Macon’s day resource center for Macon’s homeless. Attendees are asked to bring nine items from a donation request list found on the concert’s website in lieu of a ticket price.

Macon-Mercer Symphony Orchestra at The Grand Opera House

This popular blended orchestra with musicians from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Mercer University’s McDuffie Center Young Artists perform music centered around the American experience. From composer Dvořák’s “From the New World” piece to Gershwin’s “Concerto in F,” it will be a performance celebrating how America changed the musical landscape.

Public Ice Skating at The Macon Coliseum

It’s that time of year when the Coliseum floor is frozen and Maconites take to the ice in wobbly droves. The ticket price includes skate rental and one hour of skating. Additional dates and times are available on the Coliseum’s website. Advance ticket purchase is encouraged.

Wednesday, Nov. 23

The Hay House

If you have guests in town for the holiday and want to show them some of the history of Macon, a trip to the Hay House is a good place to start. Built between 1855 and 1859, the Italian Renaissance Revival style home was originally built by William and Anne Johnston. The 18,000-square-foot mansion went through several owners and in 1977 ownership was transferred to the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. The house will be open the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
