“I call it the jewel of Macon,” Alice Bailey on Pleasant Hill’s history

Third-generation Macon resident and historian Alice Bailey shares her memories of being born and raised in Macon. She shares the powerful history of the Pleasant Hill neighborhood and her concerns about its legacy now that the highway was built through it.

“It is astounding to me to see the disrespect for a neighborhood that was so thriving,” Bailey says.

She describes the Pleasant Hill of her childhood as a neighborhood with that had it all. She describes its two hospitals, a private and public high school, successful businessmen and impressively constructed homes.

“I call it the jewel of Macon,” she says.
